August 11, Colombo (LNW): The threat of flooding remains low across Sri Lanka as rainfall has weakened in most areas, according to the Irrigation Department.
Engineer L.S. Sooriyabandara, Director of the Department’s Hydrology and Disaster Management Division, said this morning that no part of the country was currently facing a flood threat.
The heaviest rainfall during the past 24 hours was recorded in the upper catchment areas of the Kalu and Mahaweli river systems, where precipitation was around 20 millimetres.
Showers were also reported yesterday in Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, along with several areas in the Western, North Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces. However, rainfall in these locations remained relatively light, with accumulations of less than 10 millimetres.
Similar low levels of rainfall were recorded in several other parts of the island.
Officials said the easing of the rain has helped keep river levels relatively stable, with no significant or sudden increases observed so far. As a result, the Irrigation Department has not identified any immediate flood risk, while authorities continue to monitor rainfall and water levels in the main river catchments.
