August 31, Colombo (LNW): The window for submitting petitions either supporting or challenging Sri Lanka’s proposed 22nd Constitutional Amendment Bill closes today (31), as the legal process surrounding the legislation moves into its next stage.
Around 30 petitions have reportedly been lodged so far, with submissions coming from parties on both sides of the debate. The filings are expected to provide the Supreme Court with a range of arguments concerning the proposed constitutional changes.
The Bill was formally presented to Parliament on 18 August by Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara, setting in motion the process for judicial consideration of the proposed amendment.
With the filing period now drawing to a close, attention is likely to turn to the court’s consideration of the petitions and the implications for the Bill’s progress through Parliament.
