British Labour MP Gareth Thomas has launched a petition calling for direct flights between London and Jaffna International Airport, aimed at improving travel links for British Tamils with family and cultural connections to Northern Sri Lanka.
The petition, titled “Bring Direct Flights to Jaffna,” highlights the challenges faced by British Tamil families travelling to Jaffna for weddings, funerals, religious festivals and family visits.
Thomas, who represents Harrow West, said there are currently no direct flights between London and Jaffna, requiring passengers to travel via Colombo before undertaking a further journey of around 400 kilometres to reach Jaffna.
According to the petition, the journey from Colombo to Jaffna by road or rail can take approximately six to seven hours. It said this can be particularly challenging for elderly travellers, families with young children and those travelling for important family occasions.
The proposed direct air service would reduce overall travel times, improve accessibility and strengthen family, cultural and community links between the United Kingdom and Northern Sri Lanka.
The petition also points to potential benefits for tourism, investment and economic development in the Northern Province.
Thomas is calling on the UK Government, Sri Lankan authorities, airlines and London airports to work together to explore and support the establishment of a commercially viable direct flight service between London and Jaffna International Airport.
Members of the public are being invited to sign the petition in support of efforts to establish the proposed air connection.
