Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has instructed university Vice-Chancellors to take immediate measures to efficiently fill existing vacancies within the university system.
The Prime Minister issued the directive while participating in a sub-committee meeting on the higher education sector under the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education.
During the meeting, Dr. Amarasuriya questioned Vice-Chancellors on the reasons for delays in making appointments to vacancies that had already been approved by the Ministry.
The Prime Minister also stressed the need for university administrations to handle investigations into allegations of ragging in a manner that gives confidence and reassurance to affected students.
She further emphasized that university authorities have a moral responsibility to take effective measures to prevent and curb ragging within universities.
