September 29, Colombo (LNW): World Heart Day is being marked today (September 29), with health organisations around the world using the occasion to draw attention to cardiovascular disease and the importance of protecting heart health.

Observed each year under the leadership of the World Heart Federation, the campaign seeks to encourage greater public understanding of heart-related illnesses while promoting practical steps that can help reduce the risk of heart attacks and other cardiovascular conditions.

Heart disease remains among the major causes of death globally, making prevention, early recognition and timely medical attention important components of reducing avoidable fatalities.

This year’s campaign carries the theme “Don’t Miss a Beat”, highlighting the need for people to pay attention to possible warning signs rather than dismissing symptoms that could indicate a heart-related problem.

The campaign also encourages healthier everyday choices, including maintaining a balanced diet, staying physically active, avoiding harmful habits and seeking medical advice when concerning symptoms arise.

Health authorities and organisations are using World Heart Day to remind the public that protecting cardiovascular health is not limited to treating illness after it develops. Greater awareness and early action can play an important role in identifying risks and responding to potential heart problems before they become more serious.
