October 12, Colombo (LNW): Nawalapitiya Urban Council Chairman Amal Priyangara and three other suspects have appeared before the Nawalapitiya Magistrate’s Court over an alleged assault said to have followed a motorcycle accident on the Nawalapitiya–Talawakele main road.
The group was brought before the court today (12) by Nawalapitiya Police following an investigation into the incident. The other suspects are the chairman’s son, his son-in-law and the assistant estate manager of Imbulpitiya Estate in Nawalapitiya.
Police investigations indicate that the incident took place on the night of October 10, after a motorcycle carrying two people was involved in an accident near the chairman’s residence. Both the rider and the passenger travelling on the motorcycle reportedly suffered injuries.
According to preliminary accounts, a confrontation allegedly erupted when the motorcyclist attempted to move the vehicle away from the accident site. The chairman, members of his family and several other individuals are alleged to have arrived at the scene, where the rider was subsequently assaulted.
Nawalapitiya Police launched an inquiry into the reported attack and examined CCTV recordings from the surrounding area as part of their efforts to establish what had occurred. The footage was reviewed before the four suspects were arrested and presented before the magistrate.
The investigation is continuing as police seek to clarify the circumstances surrounding the accident and the alleged assault.
