Prime Minister Orders Colombo Drainage Systems to Be Cleaned Within Two Weeks

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has instructed officials to accelerate the cleaning of canals and drainage systems across the Colombo District to ensure the effective drainage of rainwater ahead of an anticipated increase in rainfall.

She directed that the cleaning work be completed within the next two weeks, with regular maintenance to be carried out continuously thereafter.

The Prime Minister issued these instructions while attending the Colombo District Coordinating Committee meeting held at the Narahenpita District Secretariat.

During the meeting, Divisional Secretariats, the Department of Agrarian Development and the Provincial Irrigation Department highlighted issues encountered in cleaning canals and drainage networks. Officials also explained the difficulties arising from a shortage of technical officers and challenges involved in preparing project plans and cost estimates.

The committee also reviewed development programmes scheduled to be implemented across the Colombo District in 2026.

Officials provided updates and clarifications on planned projects covering several key areas, including rural road development, community empowerment, disaster management and the promotion of sports.
