Former Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara has called on the Government to deliver significant financial relief to the public in the 2027 Budget, cautioning that ignoring the economic hardships of ordinary people could deepen public dissatisfaction and invite sharper political criticism.
He said the upcoming budget should prioritise meaningful financial assistance, tax reductions and stronger social safety nets to lighten the burden on households. People are already struggling with severe economic difficulties, he noted, and public anger towards the Government could grow considerably if adequate relief is not given.
Nanayakkara observed that expectations for Budget 2027 are especially high, particularly for steps to ease inflationary pressures, revise taxes and strengthen social welfare support.
Commenting on the political climate, he said there is currently no significant active opposition to the Government among ordinary people. However, he warned that this lack of strong public resistance means the effects of certain laws and measures described as anti-democratic have not yet been widely felt, even though they could pose future threats to individual freedoms and democracy.
