November 08, Colombo (LNW): Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has called for greater commitment to justice, individual freedoms and equality, drawing attention to the wider significance of Deepavali against the backdrop of Sri Lanka’s ongoing economic and social difficulties.

In his Deepavali message, Premadasa said the festival represents more than a religious celebration, carrying an enduring message about resisting oppression and ensuring the triumph of righteousness over injustice.

He observed that the principles associated with the occasion had particular relevance to the country’s present circumstances, where, in his view, economic pressures and certain legislative initiatives were raising concerns about people’s rights, democratic freedoms and the rule of law.

The Opposition Leader argued that the festival’s underlying philosophy should encourage society to stand against injustice and work towards overcoming conditions that undermine people’s well-being.

He also stressed the importance of collective responsibility in protecting fundamental rights and creating an environment where freedom, fairness and prosperity could be enjoyed by all.

Premadasa further called for the country’s future to be shaped around respect for its religious, ethnic and linguistic diversity, urging citizens to work towards building a society where different communities could coexist in harmony.

Concluding his message, he wished the public the wisdom, determination and courage to uphold these principles and contribute towards creating a better Sri Lanka.
