Joint Peace Education Online Webinar in India and Sri Lanka

Date:

India and Sri Lanka hosted their first joint online HWPL Peace Education webinar.

This webinar invited 68 educators from 33 schools, 3 students, and 4 religious leaders from India, Sri Lanka, and Gambia to discuss means of developing online peace education materials.

During the webinar, participants paid keen attention to the HWPL peace education, which emphasizes the cultivation of peace-protecting civic consciousness and recognizes the essential role of educators in addressing human rights violations and educational inequalities deepened by COVID-19.

Ms. Chetnaben Vijaybhai Gora, Principal of the Kotda Ugamana Primary School, who shares same sentiment in bringing everyone together as one through education, said, “As I completed the 12 sessions of the HWPL Peace Education, I found the goal of education itself.” She also pointed out the changes in students who are now aware of the connection and harmony between humanity and the ecosystem, through peace education.

According to HWPL officials who hosted the webinar, classrooms in Sri Lanka will hold peace education this year. Under the leadership of Sri Lankan educational officials who attended the webinar, a peace teacher workshop will be held from February 10th to march 17th in the preparation for Sri Lanka’s first peace education.

HWPL, a international peace organization registered as a special consultative position with the UN Economic and Social Council, has signed MOUs with 303 schools in 53 countries from 2016 to the present. A TeachingGoesOn campaign and peace teacher training are also underway with teachers around the world to overcome the public education crisis, educational inequality, and problems with student alienation caused by the pandemic.
