Police detain over 4,000 suspects in ongoing crime prevention operation

January 27, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka Police have reported a significant crackdown on criminal activity, with 249 individuals directly involved in criminal acts arrested during a 12-day period as part of a special operation launched to curb rising crime rates across the country.

The operation, which commenced on January 12, 2025, has also seen the arrest of 4,020 people who were the subjects of outstanding warrants.

As part of the comprehensive operation, authorities have conducted widespread inspections, with more than 277,000 individuals and 104,000 vehicles thoroughly checked.

This extensive monitoring has been instrumental in the successful identification and arrest of suspects, further bolstering the Police’s efforts to restore public safety.

In addition to targeting individuals directly linked to criminal activity, the operation is also focused on reducing specific crimes such as robberies and house break-ins, which have been prevalent in recent months.

Police officials have noted a marked decrease in these particular types of crime since the operation’s launch, suggesting that the heightened security measures are having a positive impact on curbing criminal behaviour.

Authorities have underscored the ongoing nature of the operation, with additional efforts expected to continue throughout the year.
