Sri Lanka allows Chinese warship, navigates Indian concerns

Colombo (LNW): A Chinese Navy warship capable of surveillance has docked at the Colombo port, nearly a year after another spy vessel berthed at a strategic port in the country and raised concerns in India.

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy warship HAI YANG 24 HAO arrived at the port of Colombo on Thursday, the Sri Lankan Navy said. The vessel is to leave on Saturday.

“The 129 metre-long ship which arrived in Colombo is manned by a crew of 138 and it is commanded by Commander Jin Xin.

The ship p is scheduled to depart the country today,” the Navy statement said. According to media reports on Friday, Sri Lanka delayed its arrival upon concerns raised by India. “The Chinese authorities sought permission for it earlier, but Sri Lanka delayed permission because of resistance from India, local media reported.

Despite a briefing by Sri Lanka to Indian officials, the latter remained concerned about the research ship’s visit to the island nation.

In August last year, a similar visit by the Chinese ballistic missile and satellite tracking ship, ‘Yuan Wang 5’, which arrived in the southern Sri Lankan port of Hambantota elicited strong reactions from India.

There were apprehensions in New Delhi about the possibility of the vessel’s tracking systems attempting to snoop on Indian defence installations while being on its way to the Sri Lankan port.

India is keeping an eye on the Chinese warship which docked at the Colombo Port this week.

The Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said that India carefully monitors any development that bears on the country’s security interests. He also said that India takes all necessary measures to defend its security interests.

“I am not sure whether it is a warship or not. Having seen these reports, I would emphasise that the government carefully monitors any development having a bearing on the country’s security interests and takes all necessary measures to defend them,” Bagchi said in his weekly press briefing.

Sri Lanka has increasingly come under pressure from world powers such as the United States and India not to allow docking of Chinese military vessels in its ports.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has maintained that Sri Lanka stands for a neutral Asia-centric foreign policy without being caught in super-power rivalry. Also, he said the conflict involving Taiwan should not allow to be played out in the waters of Indian Ocean.

Currently Sri Lanka is in an exercise to manage equally good relations both with New Delhi and Beijing because both the powers are crucial in restructuring the country’s external debts.

The President visited New Delhi recently and held talks on numerous connectivity projects between the two countries including land connectivity. India is skeptical whether Sri Lanka has the necessary strength to maintain a neutral foreign policy.

Govt assures commitment to address pressing issues affecting the plantation community: Thondaman

Colombo (LNW): President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Minister of Water Supply and Estate Infrastructure Development Jeevan Thondaman concluded a pivotal meeting at the Presidential Secretariat on Friday (11), in a significant step towards advancing the well-being of the plantation community.

The meeting underscored the government’s commitment to address pressing issues and introduce ‘transformative solutions to plantation communities,’ Thondaman tweeted.

The decisions made at the meeting are as follows;

  1. Strategic Utilisation of Indian Grant: The President and the Minister are in complete agreement that the generous Rs. 3 billion Indian Government grant should catalyse substantive and sustainable changes within plantation communities. The aim is to move beyond superficial modifications and steer towards impactful transformations that uplift communities on multiple fronts.
  2. Deed Programme: Recognising the importance of property rights, the government is initiating a comprehensive deed programme for the 44,000 homes built since 1972 within these communities. It is unacceptable that residents who have received homes over decades still lack valid property deeds. The focus is resolute – swift action to ensure rightful ownership and security for homeowners.
  3. Land Ownership Mechanism: The two agreed on establishing a transparent mechanism for land ownership that reinforces property rights for plantation communities. The government will introduce a mechanism that will empower individuals to gain rightful ownership over the land they have live in for generations. It is a pivotal step towards rectifying the housing crisis in plantation communities.
  4. Address Wage Disparities and a New Revenue Sharing Model: With a pragmatic understanding of last year’s inflation crisis, Minister Thondaman is embarking on pursuing a wage hike for estate workers. The Rs. 1000 daily wage is grossly inadequate and pushes plantation workers deeper into poverty. The government will also commence crafting a new revenue-sharing model that strikes a balance between workers’ livelihoods and the sustainability of companies. Collaborative prosperity will be the government’s objective.
  5. Resolve unpaid EPF & ETF by JEDB and SPC: The President agreed to resolve the pending EPF and ETF payments owed by Government-owned plantations to estate workers. The Minister said he is confident that his commitment will addresses a long-standing concern of workers.
  6. Equitable Access to Services: With a dedication to equity, the government will re-evaluate GN division boundaries in plantation regions. The ratio of Grama Niladharis to families in plantation regions is unacceptable. The Minister wishes to rectify disparities for plantation communities in accessing basic Government services, making these services equally accessible to all.
  7. Enhancing Education: Recognising the integral role of education, the President and the Minister agreed to resolve teacher shortages in upcountry regions. This involves both new teaching appointments and tailored training programmes, thereby elevating the quality of education available to plantation communities.
  8. Presidential Task Force: The President will establish a Task Force to address the multifaceted challenges faced by plantation communities. This task force embodies the President’s commitment to developing well-rounded, effective solutions that span various aspects of development for the plantation community.
  9. Ethical Lease Extensions for RPCs: The President underscored his dedication to ethical tea trade practices, and this will extend to lease extensions for Regional Plantation Companies (RPCs). The government’s commitment to sustainability and fair practices is resolute.
  10. Unifying Voices for Collective Progress: As all opposition upcountry MPs skipped the meeting on Friday to attend another event, Thondaman proposed to the President to convene another meeting that will involve upcountry MPs from all parties and communities to address issues faced by the plantation community.

President instructs to take steps to establish the proposed sports university soon

0

PMD: Steps have been taken to speed up the operations of the proposed Sports University by providing the opportunity to undergraduates to complete the degree with expertise in sports, State Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Rohana Dissanayaka said.

By enhancing the Diyagama Mahinda Rajapaksa Sports Complex, it is intended to construct the Sports University, which is expected to recognize outstanding athletes both locally and at the school level and provide the necessary facilities to advance their abilities.

He expressed these views today (11) during a press conference themed ‘Collective Path to a Stable Country’ held at the Presidential Media Centre (PMC).

The State Minister added that the National Sports Council has been established, putting an end to allegations of political interference in the selection of athletes for international sports competitions. He said that the new National Sports Council, which would include seasoned athletes and experienced professionals, will contribute to the development of a robust sports culture in the nation.

Meanwhile, the State Minister also said that steps will be taken to restart the National Youth Sports Festival and the ‘Thurunu Shakthi’ program.

State Minister Rohana Dissanayaka further commented;

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports is doing a wide range of work to improve the sporting abilities of the youth of this country to raise them to the national and international level.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe is a leader who has high hopes for the youth of this country. His contribution to the nation’s youth by founding the National Youth Service Council in 1979 deserves to be remembered.

The two main institutions under our Ministry are the National Youth Service Council and the National Youth Corps. Every Regional Secretariat of this nation has a youth service officer assigned to them under the National Youth Service Council to handle youth-related issues.

The National Youth Corps is a program that has been put in place to enhance the talents of young people in this country who have left school between the ages of 18 and 29 in order to create a perfect youth generation with abilities. They are also given the knowledge on various languages including Korean and Japanese.

Also, in the recent past, various issues have arisen due to political interference in the selection of athletes for international competitions. Therefore, it must be said that the step taken to appoint the National Sports Council is a very important one.

The National Sports Council consists of veteran athletes like Arjuna Ranatunga and Susanthika Jayasinghe, who are experienced sports personalities who have an understanding of the country’s sports. It has paved the opportunity to make relevant selections through appropriate levels in getting athletes to participate in international competitions. Therefore, today no one can accuse of political interference in these affairs.

66 of the 72 sports federations in this country are currently in operation. In every sports federation in this country, another rival team is always vying for control. I request such teams to give the opportunity to the teams that can play and support the development of sports in this country.

A new film in South India is so huge companies are giving workers a day off to watch it

By Rhea Mogul and Manveena Suri, CNN

CNN: With people dancing on the streets and setting off firecrackers, the jubilant scenes wouldn’t have been out of place in an Indian movie.

In fact, they were the real-life celebrations of thousands of cinema fans in South India as they welcomed the latest film release by one of the country’s biggest superstars.

“Jailer,” a Tamil-language action thriller by celebrated actor Rajinikanth, has taken the region by storm since hitting cinemas Thursday and is already expected to set box office records.

The film is the first in two years to feature the actor, who enjoys a demigod-like status among his fans, and so great has the anticipation been that some companies have given their staff a day off to watch it.

The Kerala-based education company Redbooks Abroad gifted its staff free tickets to the first showing, saying in a memo seen by CNN that it was a “day to relax, rejoice, and immerse yourselves in the magic of the silverscreen.”

“We hope that this day off and movie experience will bring joy, relaxation, and renewed energy to you all. Let us cherish this moment and create memories together,” it said in the memo.

Another company, Le Hive, based in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, said they were giving staff half a day off to “avoid sudden sick leaves.”

The companies’ actions are just one aspect of the feverish expectations surrounding the release, which local news channels have spared no detail in covering, running live blogs, interviewing fans and filming scenes outside theaters.

The film collected about $5 million at the box office on Thursday, based on early estimates, making it the highest opening for a Tamil-language film in 2023 so far, according to local reports.

Fans dance during the screening of Indian actor Rajinikanth’s new Tamil-language movie ‘Jailer’ on the first day of its release in Mumbai on August 10.

A cult-like following

Rajinikanth, 72, who has starred in more than 160 movies, is near synonymous with South Indian cinema.

Known for elaborate action sequences and unique dance moves, he has the sort of box office appeal enjoyed by Tom Cruise in the West and is thought to be one of Asia’s highest paid actors.

Born Shivaji Rao Gaekwad in the southern city of Bengaluru in 1950, Rajinikanth made his debut 25 years later in the movie “Apoorva Raagangal,” which became a commercial success.

The level of adoration among his fans has often been likened to that of a religious figure. Some of his fans have been known to celebrate his new releases by pouring milk on cardboard images of the actor, an act of veneration usually reserved for Hindu deities.

Similar scenes of jubilation met his 2016 film “Kabali,” in which he donned stylish three-piece suits and John Lennon sunglasses to play a wrongfully convicted gangster recently released from jail.

Its release day became an unofficial public holiday for many with several companies in the cities of Bengaluru and Chennai giving their employees a day off to watch the film.

Rajinikanth is also a recipient of the Padma Bhushan and the Padma Vibhushan, two of India’s highest civilian awards, for his contributions to the arts.

From Bollywood, to Tollywood and Kollywood

While India’s multibillion-dollar film industry may be most known abroad for its Hindi-language “Bollywood” productions, nearly half of the country’s 1.4 billion people don’t count Hindi as their primary language.

Within the country the “Tollywood” (Telugu language) and “Kollywood” (Tamil language) sectors of South India enjoy similar popularity to Bollywood.

Outside Bollywood, earnings from the South Indian media and entertainment industry have nearly doubled year on year and in 2022 contributed an estimated 52% to all of India’s film revenues, according to a report this year by the Confederation of Indian Industry.

One of the biggest South Indian hits last year, “RRR,” made history by scooping its first Oscar for the best original song, “Naatu Naatu.”"RRR" (Variance Films)

This Indian film is nominated for an Oscar. Hear how it’s already made history

Praised for its buoyant choreography and catchy tune, the song also won a Golden Globe award and has been held up by some observers as an example of India’s growing soft power.

Accepting the Oscar this year, composer M.M. Keeravani said: “I grew up listening to The Carpenters and now here I am with the Oscars.”

He went on to sing his speech to the tune of “Top of the World” by The Carpenters.

SL ace spinner Murali’s Ceylon Beverages to set up plant for cans in India

M/S Ceylon Beverage Can Pvt Ltd of Sri Lanka, promoted by former Sri Lanka ace spinner  Muttiah Muralitharan, had sent a proposal to the Government of Karnataka seeking clearance for setting up an ‘aluminum cans and beverages filling plant’ at FMCG cluster on the outskirts of Dharwad.

The Sri Lankan company  will set up a full-fledged plant in Mummigatti off Dharwad in Karnataka, Deccan Herald (DH) reported on Thursday.

The Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) has allotted 16.70 acres of land at plot no 157, 2.64 acres on plot no 156 and 6.15 acres on plot no 158. Clearance has also been accorded for providing 3,000 kVA power by Hescom and 20 lakh litres of water per day.

The Sri Lankan company currently manufactures eight different sizes of slim, sleek and standard cans with a range of customer labels. It is setting up a plant in India owing to huge demand from this region.

In May, Ceylon Beverage tied up with Reliance Consumer Products to manufacture the cans for Campa soft drink.

Ceylon Beverages was established in 2020 and partners with several companies making mineral water, energy drinks, soft drinks and flavoured milk in cans. It has an hourly output of over 48,000 cans and 34,000 bottles. The company’s plant is equipped to fill 300 million cans per year.

The Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB), according to DH, has allotted 16.70 acres of land at plot no 157, 2.64 acres on plot no 156 and 6.15 acres on plot no 158. Clearance has also been accorded for providing 3,000 kVA power by Hescom and 20 lakh litres of water per day.

Reliance Consumer Products Ltd has signed up former cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan’s Ceylon Beverage International as the contract packaging partner for the Campa Cola beverage brand’s canning operations.

The agreement may also grant Reliance Consumer distribution rights for Sri-Lanka based Ceylon Beverage’s energy drinks and juices in India, expanding its presence in the nation’s ₹67,000 crore beverage market, people familiar with the development said, requesting anonymity.

Ceylon Beverage may also establish a packaging facility in India to support the national expansion of the Campa brand; currently Campa cans rely on direct imports from its Sri Lankan factory

Reliance Consumer already has partnerships with multiple Indian manufacturers and distributors for the Campa brand, including those with Tamil Nadu-based Asian Beverage and Kali Aerated Water Works.

Muralitharan is expected to become a “major” partner for Reliance Consumer’s beverage portfolio in India, people familiar with the development said. Ceylon Beverage’s energy brand Spinner and its juices will be retailed by Reliance Consumer in India as part of the deal, officials said.

Campa, initially launched in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, is preparing for a national rollout following its acquisition by Reliance Consumer from the Pure Drinks Group last year.
