MP Wimal Weerawansa Appears in Court Following Arrest Warrant Issuance

Date:

In a recent development, MP Wimal Weerawansa attended the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday morning (June 21), just two days after an arrest warrant was issued against him for his failure to appear in court.

The arrest warrant had been issued by Colombo Chief Magistrate Prasanna de Alwis on June 19, following Weerawansa’s absence during the court hearing regarding the case filed against his 2016 protest in front of the United Nations (UN) office in Colombo.

The charges against Weerawansa stem from allegations of causing public inconvenience by obstructing the roads surrounding the UN Office in Thummulla, Colombo, during the visit of then UN Human Rights Commissioner Prince Zeid Al Hussain to Sri Lanka in 2016.

Weerawansa’s appearance in court marks a significant development in the ongoing legal proceedings related to the aforementioned protest, and it signals a step forward in addressing the charges against him. The court will now proceed with further proceedings in the case.
