Court Rejects Bid to Delay 2026 Advanced Level Examination

July 23, Colombo (LNW): The Court of Appeal has declined to entertain a writ petition seeking to postpone the 2026 G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination, clearing the way for the national examination to proceed according to its existing timetable.

The application, filed by a group of students preparing to sit this year’s Advanced Level examination, sought a court order delaying the examination by two months. The petitioners argued that additional time was necessary before the examinations were conducted and requested judicial intervention to revise the scheduled dates.

However, the Court of Appeal dismissed the application at the preliminary stage without taking it up for substantive consideration, effectively rejecting the request to alter the examination schedule.

With the petition dismissed, there are no legal obstacles preventing the Department of Examinations from proceeding with the examination as planned. The 2026 G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination is therefore expected to commence in August as previously announced.

The ruling is likely to provide greater certainty for students, schools and examination authorities, who have been preparing for the nationwide examination based on the existing timetable. Unless any further legal action is pursued, candidates are expected to continue their preparations in line with the current schedule.
