August 09, Colombo (LNW): Police have arrested 437 people in a series of islandwide operations targeting suspected criminal activity, drug-related offences and other violations, authorities said.
The operations, carried out yesterday (08), involved checks on 33,024 individuals as officers stepped up efforts to identify wanted suspects and prevent further offences.
Police said 15 of those taken into custody were identified as persons allegedly linked to criminal activities. A further 135 people wanted under outstanding warrants were arrested during the operations.
Traffic-related offences also accounted for a significant number of arrests. Police said 65 motorists were taken into custody for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, while another 68 were arrested over dangerous or reckless driving.
In addition, legal proceedings have been initiated against 4,189 individuals for various other traffic violations detected during the islandwide checks.
