November 08, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka has taken a step towards exploring next-generation air transport, with passenger-carrying drones undergoing test flights at Colombo Port City ahead of a scheduled public demonstration on 11 November.

The trials form part of an initiative to assess the feasibility of introducing electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft to the country, potentially opening up new possibilities for urban transportation and other commercial applications.

The project involves China-based aviation technology firm EHang Holdings, which specialises in autonomous electric aircraft designed to transport passengers and cargo. Footage circulating from the Port City area has shown one of the aircraft being put through flight tests as preparations continue for the upcoming event.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the demonstration will highlight how this emerging technology could contribute to urban air mobility while offering alternative travel experiences for both domestic and international visitors.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka has also been engaging with EHang and relevant government institutions to examine the requirements for introducing the technology into the country’s aviation sector.

As part of the pilot initiative, an aircraft reportedly designed to accommodate two passengers has already been brought into Sri Lanka.

Beyond passenger transport, authorities are examining several potential uses for the technology, including medical evacuation services, emergency response operations and the delivery of essential supplies to communities in geographically difficult-to-access areas.

The proposed applications could prove particularly useful in situations where conventional road transportation is time-consuming or impractical.

The 11 November demonstration is expected to offer a closer look at the aircraft’s operational capabilities and the possibilities of integrating electric air transport into Sri Lanka’s existing mobility network.

However, any wider deployment would depend on further technical assessments, aviation safety requirements and the necessary regulatory approvals.
