0

Japan International Coopertaion Agency (JICA) has decided to provide additional support to procure medicine under the technical cooperation “Project for Strengthening COVID-19 Response” project, responding to the serious medicine shortages in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka is still facing serious shortages of medicine due to the ongoing crisis. Some hospitals need to suspend their surgeries because of lack of medicines and surgical equipment.

The prices of medicines are rapidly increasing, which are mostly imported but unable to import because of the current situation in Sri Lanka.

WHO says that the health care system at the national level suffers from shortage of 121 essential medicines as of September 2022. JICA hopes that the additional procurement of medicine contributes to mitigate the serious impact on the health services.

On 26th September 2022, the amendment of Record of Discussion (R/D) of the technical cooperation “Project for Strengthening COVID-19 Response” was successfully concluded between Dr. Sunil de Alwis, Additional Secretary of Ministry of Health and Tetsuya Yamada, Chief Representative of JICA Sri Lanka office.

Original Input from JICA for this project was to provide Rs.300mn worth essential equipment for the base hospitals in Teldeniya, Warakapola, Walikanda, Pimbura, Nawalapitiya, Hingurakgoda, Karawanella, and Avissavella (for mainly treatment) and District General Hospital Hambantota (for particularly PCR tests).

It has also planned to provide online training, for strengthening capacities in the preparedness and development for diagnostics and treatment services to combat infectious diseases including COVID-19.

Yamada states that this emergency aid  is to secure lifesaving medicines to be procured promptly to treat patients suffering from other deceases, and JICA will extend this support in close cooperation with MOH and other related parties from Sri Lankan side so that the medicines to be procured will reach people in need as soon as possible.

The year 2022 marks the 70th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Sri Lanka.

The Government of Japan as well as JICA have been supporting the Sri Lankan healthcare system for a long time and will continue the cooperation in this sector for further upgrade of quality of medical services and the hospital system in Sri Lanka.

India is resolved to create more capacities for global good

0

India’s statement at the General Debate of the 77th session of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on 24 September 2022 projected India’s age-old outlook of seeing the world as one family (Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam). External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S. Jaishankar, who delivered the statement, said that India is resolved to create more capacities for global good in the next 25 years.  He called for greater unity and solidarity and coming together on global issues, such as terrorism, pandemics or the environment. 700 projects by India across the world underlines the focus on green growth, better connectivity, digital delivery and accessible health.

2.     Reaffirming India’s philosophy of responding in accordance with the needs and priorities of her partners, EAM highlighted that India offers partnerships to her brothers and sisters in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Supplying vaccines to over 100 countries was a testimony to this approach. India’s Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief evacuation operations always accommodated non-Indian nationals in distress.

3.     On India’s neighbourhood, EAM noted that accumulation of debt in fragile economies is of particular concern. Calling on the international community to rise above narrow national agendas, he alluded to the unprecedented assistance of USD 3.8 billion extended to Sri Lanka in 2022 as an instance of exceptional measure by India during exceptional times. He stressed that India has stood strong with her neighbours on aspects such as disaster response and humanitarian assistance.

4.     He underlined India’s consistent emphasis on Peace, dialogue and diplomacy and said that this is not an era of war or of conflict but it is a time for development and for cooperation. He also reiterated India’s ‘zero-tolerance’ approach on terrorism.

5.     Alluding to “Lifestyle for Environment” or LiFE, as declared by Prime Minister Modi in Glasgow on the sidelines of COP26 as India’s homage to Mother Nature, EAM reiterated India’s support to any collective and equitable endeavor to protect the environment and further global wellness.

6.     Highlighting that the injustice faced by the Global South is to be decisively addressed, he expressed India’s willingness to take up greater responsibilities and made a call for reformed multilateralism with reforms of the UN Security Council at its core. He said this enjoyed considerable support among UN members.

Giorgia Meloni claims victory to become Italy’s most far-right prime minister since Mussolini

0

(CNN)Brothers of Italy leader Giorgia Meloni has claimed victory in a general election that seems set to install her as Italy’s first female prime minister, leading the most far-right government since the fascist era of Benito Mussolini.

Addressing the media and supporters in the early hours of Monday morning, Meloni said it was “a night of pride for many and a night of redemption.”

“It’s a victory I want to dedicate to everyone who is no longer with us and wanted this night,” she said. “Starting tomorrow we have to show our value … Italians chose us, and we will not betray it, as we never have,” she said.

Preliminary results put an alliance of far-right parties, led by Meloni’s ultraconservative Brothers of Italy party, on track to win at least 44% of the vote, according to the Italian Interior Ministry.

With 63% of votes counted, the Brothers of Italy party had won at least 26%, with coalition partners the League, led by Matteo Salvini, taking around 9% and Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia scoring over 8%. Final results are expected later Monday, but it’s expected to take weeks for a new government to be formed.

Meloni entered Italy’s crowded political scene in 2006 and co-founded the Brothers of Italy in 2012, a party whose agenda is rooted in Euroskepticism and anti-immigration policies.

In the last election in 2018, the party won just 4.5% of the vote, but its popularity has soared in recent years, underscoring Italy’s longstanding rejection of mainstream politics, seen most recently with the country’s support of anti-establishment parties such as the Five Star Movement and Salvini’s League.

Celebrating the early results on Sunday evening, Salvini said on Twitter, “Center-right in clear advantage both in the House and in the Senate! It will be a long night, but already now I want to say THANK YOU.”

Meloni differs from coalition partner leaders on the issue of Ukraine. Whereas Berlusconi and Salvini have both said they would like to review sanctions against Russia because of their impact on the Italian economy, Meloni has been steadfast in her support for defending Ukraine.

A 45-year-old mother from Rome, Meloni is deeply conservative, openly anti-LBGT, and has threatened to place same sex unions, which were legalized in Italy in 2016, under review. She has also called abortion a “tragedy,” raising fears for the future of women’s rights in the country.

All shall align to save country from its ‘bankrupt’ status: AKD

0

In light of the recognition of Sri Lanka being a ‘bankrupt’ nation before the world due to the Central Bank Governor’s declaration on April 12 of a debt default on forex debt, the challenges lie before the country will not be easy and all, therefore, shall align to save it, said Leader of the National People’s Power (NPP) MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake, speaking to a rally organised in the Akuressa Electorate yesterday (25).

The NPP Leader noted that Sri Lanka, being a ‘bankrupt’ nation in the eyes of the world, will not be given debt except small grants, reminding that his party had warned of the consequences of the trajectory on which the rulers navigated the country long ago.

“Even beggars of Tamil Nadu send money to our country in a collective effort. The situation within the data is very alarming. A little bit of fuel is received, and the problem is not solved. The amount of foreign debt due from April is US $ 2,490 million. By March, the debt was paid, and some fuel was brought. In September, there is only a little more fuel without the debt being paid. The reality is that our economy is worse than March. Every organisation in the world has warned about this,” Dissanayake said.

Reminiscing the highlights of the people’s struggle against the regime, the NPP Leader said the biggest uprising of the people of their lifetime has ousted a leader who was known to have built a culture of fear and intimidation, and the people, therefore, have the power of organised assembly.

“The ‘Aragalaya’ is a great inspiratipn. There was a great uprising of the people. But the result is a partial one. Ranil Wickremesinghe, who could not even to be elected to Parliament, became the President. So, everyone has a little bit of frustration. There is sadness for not being able to accomplish the maximum victory. But the second uprising will take place under the leadership and direction of the National People’s Power. That is why we need to be organised. Scattered agitation and booing can only express your anger and pain. The problem is not solved. The real solution can only be obtained by establishing an organised force. Although many people are nervous, we are not. We are forming divisional councils in all Grama Niladhari divisions in Sri Lanka,” he added.
